Student Film Openings

Student Film Openings

The Edge

My favourite film opening was The Edge. This was an action film and the genre could be worked out easily from the very start of the film. It was very creative with the title sequence, for example, the production company title was written along the roof of the car park. This film showed a good use of editing and the lighting was quite dark which suited the fact that it was a chase scene in an action film. It included many shots, for example, close ups, tracking shots and long shots of the setting. I really liked the fact that the main character in the sequence was on roller skates because it is different to all the others and makes you remember the film. I also thought the music used in the film suited the genre very well. It changes and becomes more intense when the two bad people are shown and appear as though they are catching up on the main character.

A School's Nightmare

A good tracking shot was used in this opening sequence and there was a good camera shot through the mirror of the car, although I thought they could have used some more interesting shots throughout the film. This film genre was a horror which was quite hard to work out at first and it is not until the zombie appears that it really looks like a horror. However the lighting used is dark which does give a horror effect to the film. I liked the fact that it used actors of different ages because it adds more variety but I thought that they could have been more creative with the titles because they came in the same way each time. In my opinion, the accident could have been set up a bit better because the camera shot makes it look as though the boy standing in the road would have seen the car. To improve, I thought it would have been better if the boy were facing in another direction. The costume for the zombie could have been more realistic at the end as well.

Roses are Red

Of all the opening sequences, I think this had the most creative title sequence. It followed a girl getting ready and the group used everyday objects and created titles out of them. I liked the way names appeared out of paint and mascara, for example. However I thought the ending for this sequence was quite confusing because the film first looks like a rom-com but the narrative is quite dark at the end which confuses the genre. This film uses a lot of mid-shots and a couple of tracking shots, but I thought it could use a wider variety of shots, like long-shots and close-ups.
